What is Census 2027?
A census is a comprehensive, official count of every person living in a country — along with detailed information about their households. India's Census 2027 is the first digital-first census in the nation's history.
Definition and Purpose
The Census of India is conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. It is a massive data-collection exercise that happens once every 10 years. Every household in the country is counted, and information is recorded about each person — their age, gender, education, occupation, and living conditions.
Census data is the backbone of India's planning process. It directly influences:
- How much money each state and district receives from the central government
- Where new schools, hospitals, and roads get built
- How many seats each state has in Parliament (Delimitation)
- Which communities qualify for reservations and welfare schemes
- Population-based welfare programmes like mid-day meals and MNREGA

What is Houselisting and Housing Census?
The Census 2027 is conducted in two phases:
- Houselisting and Housing Census (Phase 1): Census enumerators visit every building and record details about the structure — walls, roof, floor material, number of rooms, and amenities. In Maharashtra, this happens from May 16 to June 14, 2026.
- Population Enumeration (Phase 2): Detailed information about each household member is collected — name, age, education, occupation, and more.
What is Self-Enumeration (SE)?
For Census 2027, the Government of India has introduced Self-Enumeration (SE) — a new option that allows the Head of Household to fill in their household's census data online, before the enumerator visits.
